Gryphon Gallery: Rosalind Scott

Alumni
Ros Scott is only one of a few GNS (NHS/Glenlyon) alumni who has taught at the same school they graduated from. She attended GNS (NHS) from 1970 until 1973, making this her 50-year anniversary for graduating with her NHS peers.

A talented drama student, singer, dancer and musician, she had dreams when leaving school of becoming a famous actress, but sometimes things take a different path. She attended the University of Victoria graduating with a BA in English Literature and French. Possibly as a result of her interest at school while Co-President of the Red Cross and Social Service Club, Ros then spent two years volunteering in Papua New Guinea with the CUSO (Canadian University Services Overseas) program. Upon her return home, she earned her Teaching Certification and taught for 15 years, seven of those at Glenlyon/GNS from 1985 to 1992 as Head of French and Homeroom teacher at the Beach Drive Campus.

A desire for a career change led her first to become an employment consultant, before becoming Executive Director of the Westshore Chamber of Commerce from 2005 to 2008. In the Greater Victoria community, volunteering has taken her to roles in the arts, social service organizations, Rotary and as an ambassador for the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce. These successful experiences enabled her to become the President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Vancouver Island, during which time she has also served as Chair of the BBB Canadian Region for North America.

Yet like everything that led to this latest, highly important position, the role at its core is teaching. Whether that means helping businesses work towards best practices or educating consumers about protecting themselves from scams as just a few things among the myriad of roles under the BBB umbrella.

So Ros may not have achieved her schoolgirl dream of becoming an actress, but it certainly seems that she found the right ‘stage’ to on which to perform her talents!
