How to Pick the Perfect Pumpkin at Galey Farms

Fall is in full force, and the Kindergarten classes at the Beach Campus had an opportunity to head to Galey Farms to take part in some seasonal festivities. Ms. Sullivan and Ms. Bird’s classes both enjoyed time in the pumpkin patch, riding the Galey Farm train and taking a hayride on October 17. Big pumpkins, yellow pumpkins, round pumpkins—the students all had an opportunity to roam the patch to find their perfect pumpkin. Kindergarten student Grace says her favourite part of the day was picking the pumpkins. “You got to get your very own,” she says, noting she was surprised there were so many pumpkins in the patch. The Kindergarten class was also joined by the Middle School Prefects on their fall outing, who helped them pick out the perfect pumpkins as well as one for themselves. “We went on a hayride, and the spooky train and we found a bunch of pumpkins!” says Kindergarten student Ophira, who adds her favourite part was the hayride. “We would get to go here, there, there and I didn’t have to scream like I did on the spooky train.” “My favourite part was getting the pumpkins with the kids…and we got to see all the pumpkins,” says Middle School Prefect Sienna. “It was fun, they were kind of specific about their pumpkins, but it was cute, and they all found one.” This isn’t the first time the Prefects have joined the Kindergarten classes for pumpkin picking; it has been going on for many years. “It’s important to go to so they can be with older kids and aren’t scared of them [in the future] and learn everyone is nice,” says Sienna. Heading to the farm tied perfectly into the students learning about the different seasons, and the local environment. With the pumpkins the Kindergarteners picked at the farm, they will get to decorate them in art class (no carving) and also do science experiments on them—including to see if they sink or float.
