Meet the Team: Mr. Devin Gallery

Mr. Devin Gallery is a new member of our GNS community, having joined us from Shanghai, China. He currently teaches Physical Health and Education 9 and 10, and Individuals and Societies 10. 

What made you want to be part of the GNS community?

Before moving to Victoria, I spent 15 years living and working at IB schools in Shanghai, China. When my wife and I decided to move back to Canada we were researching IB schools on Vancouver Island and we were instantly drawn to GNS and its community. I also found numerous connections between GNS’s core values and my own principles as both an individual and an educator. I knew GNS would be the perfect fit for me. 

How did you choose teaching as the right path for you?

I was very fortunate to be exposed to some wonderful educators in university, whom I felt were teaching through a lens in which I hadn’t yet been exposed to in my educational journey. Through these interactions, I developed a stronger sense of curiosity and a strong belief in an approach to holistic education. This sparked excitement within me and I wanted to explore that further. 

What are some of your interests outside of school?

I love to spend time with my wife and our dogs, travel, play sports, listen to/play music and spend time outdoors.  

What is something most people don’t know about you?

I was a travelling and recording artist in an indie rock band for nine years. 

What do you like about living and working in Victoria? 

We are fortunate to live in this breathtaking corner of the world, surrounded by nature and wildlife. I love immersing myself in all that Victoria has to offer and exploring this beautiful island. 

What made you become a I&S and/or PHE teacher? 

Teaching Physical and Health Education and Individuals and Societies aligns with my personal identity. I am genuinely passionate about maintaining an active lifestyle on a daily basis. I firmly believe in the transformative impact of organized sports and activities, which can help in holistic development in people. 

In I&S, we have the ability to influence and mould the perspectives of the world we share. Gaining insight into our world, and understanding the diverse perspectives, values, and experiences of people can contribute to the creation of a more peaceful global community. 

I want to share these passions with all students I have the privilege of teaching in hopes of providing a new perspective towards these subjects.
