GNS’ Culture Club will be celebrating the Lunar New Year on February 14 during assembly! There will be a Lunar New Year presentation, followed by a Cultural Food and Game Fair.
“Last year’s Culture Club hosted a Lunar New Year Assembly/Culture Fair and it was a very fun showcase of the diversity in culture at GNS,” said Alexis Kuo `24, Culture Club’s Student President. “This year’s Culture Club hopes to emulate last year’s success! Lunar New Year is a very important holiday in many Asian cultures, similar to how important Christmas is in Western countries, so we hope that by acknowledging this holiday we can bring a different cultural experience to students. I hope that our fellow peers come away from this experience with a little more knowledge and an appreciation for other cultures.”
Alexis has also arranged for February 14 to be cultural dress day, where students can proudly wear their cultural dress or colours symbolizing aspects of their culture.
The fair will feature a memory card game table, a zodiac bingo station and food stands that will be situated in the Gudewill Library for all students to enjoy. The game tables will feature delicious cultural sweet and/or salty treats for both winners and participants.
Katharine Morley `25 and Chelsea Mak `25 are the coordinators of the food fair aspect of this celebration.
“Our goal is to promote cultural diversity, and for our school community to learn more about different cultures, specifically their foods and snacks,” said Chelsea. “Our bakery items will be for sale, and the money will be donated to a cultural charity (TBD) so we would love to see you there.”
