How can we apply scientific thinking to create art? Grade 6 students have been studying pigments and mixtures, investigating how to create pigments from found materials. They applied their analytical science skills to create recipes for their pigments, then used those pigments to create beautiful art pieces. They started out by testing different found materials – like flowers, leaves, and Kool-aid, and documenting their pigmentation properties. They mulched and mixed, and when they had formulated a plan they set to work creating their own artwork using the pigments they researched. The students used many different methods to create a wide range of art pieces, from dyed wool to vegetable paintings!
