GNS’ Senior School Round Square has been keeping busy these past few months, planning many initiatives to support the local community.
A recent initiative was a waste audit aimed to assess GNS’ contributions to food waste and poor recycling. Students from both the Middle and Senior Schools worked with Mr. Goddard and Ms. Greven to come up with a future waste reduction/climate action plan for the school. Round Square also supported the local Times Colonist book sale by hosting a book drive at our school to collect gently used books to donate to the local event that funds literacy programs on Vancouver Island
From May 6 to May 17, Round Square hosted a food drive in support of the Mustard Seed Food Bank. The Mustard Seed Food Bank is a local food bank based in Victoria that is 100% funded by the community and provides meals to those in need, from children to elderly people, in order to reduce poverty and hunger in our community. On average, the Mustard Seed Food Bank provides more than 1500 meals per day. As the school year slowly comes to an end, local food banks, such as the Mustard Seed, experience a sharp drop in donations. This means that initiatives such as the Spring Food Drive are essential to supporting the Mustard Seed.
Upcoming future initiatives include weekly visits to Saint Vincent de Paul to help sort and package food items, beach clean-ups at Gonzales Beach, and potentially, a clothing drive for Women in Need (WIN) and a staff versus student fundraising soccer match! Watch for details!
