This spring, 50 students from Grades 9 to 12 participated in the club. And of that group, 20 students played competitively while the rest focused on recreational badminton.

Coached by Mr. Pat Giommi and Mr. Charlson Tang, the students competed in a variety of different competitions.

Grade 9s were invited to participate in the Grade 9 Badminton City Championships, hosted at St. Margarets School.

“The boys’ doubles team that included Edwin Cheng and Lewis W. placed first in the city,” said Mr. Giommi. “They handily won all their games. The girls’ doubles team of Annie Ward and Kerry Ning also did well and were in the top flight of the consolation round.”

The Grade 10s were invited to participate in the Grade 10 Badminton City Championship that was hosted by Spectrum Community School.

“The girls’ double team of Cindy Yu and Sophie Wu got all the way to the finals and ended up in fourth place,” added Mr. Giommi. After going undefeated the entire season in regular league play, the Senior School Badminton team lost their first playoff game to Victoria High School, which put them in a battle for third and fourth place. On May 2, the students played hard against Esquimalt High School and ended up securing fourth overall in the Lower Vancouver Island School Sports B League.

“Congratulations to all of those students, especially our Senior players, Henry Yam, Lily Kang and Jo-An Chia, who played extremely well,” said Mr. Giommi. “Big thank you to Mr. Duncan Brice and Ms. Ali Doerksen for supporting the badminton team all season. We got new rackets which were much appreciated. And all the parents that came out to games to support us.”
