By Rebecca Nielson Last week, group of 32 GNS Gryphons from Grades 6-12 traveled to Shawnigan Lake School to participate in the 10th Shawnigan Model UN. The Conference was centred around the United Nations Global Goals – students stepped into the shoes of ambassadors and represented their countries in a variety of committees such as No Poverty, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, and Peace Justice and Strong Institutions. The Gryphons were excellent diplomats engaging in debate, discussion, collaboration and even passing a few resolutions. We also had a few GNS students, Abi Bowering and Lam Vu, who both were members of the leadership team at ShawMUN. Both students chaired debate, and directed their respective committees. There were a few students who were recognized for their contributions:

  • Eya Ibrahim and Mackenzie Heany were awarded the ‘best delegate’ award as they represented Canada in the No Poverty Committee
  • Hannah Yin was recognized as the ‘best researched delegate’ and she represented South Korea in the Clean Water and Sanitation Committee
  • Leo Prosalendis received an honourable mention as he represented Iran in the Affordable and Clean Energy Committee

Model UN is for everyone, and we look forward to having more students participate in our upcoming GNS Model UN (GMUN) on Nov 29-30. Interested delegates should speak to their parents, and check out the registration information on gnsmun.ca. Students should contact Ms. Howey and Mr. Marthaller in the Middle School and Mrs. Nielson or Senor Morales Gil in the Senior School.  PHOTO GALLERY
