Vital Youth
This year, members of the GNS Round Square Club took part in the Victoria Foundations, Vital Youth program. Eleven GNS students interviewed three charities to determine who would be most deserving of a grant offered by the foundation. The committee members ultimately chose the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness (ACEH), and RAVEN (Respecting Aboriginal Values and Environmental Needs). Owen and Caitlin spoke at the Vital Youth final celebration at the Parkside Hotel this past April, along with speakers from eleven other schools here on the south island.
Further exciting news! Owen was asked to be one of two speakers for a Donor’s Tea at Government House on the afternoon of May 11. We are especially proud of Owen for doing such an outstanding job as a speaker that he would be chosen for this special event.
Earth Week
Last month, GNS Celebrated Earth Week with a wonderful set of activities and service experiences. Assemblies focused on our school recycling programs, and plans for a school clothing swap and bottle drive. Saturday, April 29, GNS students gathered in the Denford Hall parking lot for a Bottle Drive. Members of the school and local community dropped off their recyclables while students sorted and donated the bottles. Funds raised were donated to the Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness (ACEH).
Service starts early! On April 26, the Grade 2 classes worked with the Friends of Bowker Creek to release salmon fry into Bowker Creek. Thank you to Friends of Bowker Creek for providing the students with opportunities to learn about the salmon life cycle, and preserving habitat. When these salmon return to the creek these students will be in Grade 5, and they will see firsthand more ways they can have a positive impact on their community.

This month we shine the Spotlight on the Learning Outcome – ‘Working Collaboratively with Others.’ This year, a group of 11 students worked with Ms. Thijs as part of the Victoria Foundations Vital Youth Project. Read the full story here. As students approach this learning outcome they consider how they work with others. Who do I know who could help me help others? How can I expand my network of contacts who could support my efforts to help others? What collaborative skills and strategies can I use in order to work effectively with others involved in my service experiences?

Get Growing Seedling Distribution, Fairfield Gonzales Community Association
May 19 (Pro-D Day) shifts vary from 3-6:30 p.m.
Seven to 10 volunteers who can help set-up for the event, distribute vegetable seedlings, direct event participants and clean up.
