After playing seven sets of games in a 26-hour period—of which three went to third set tiebreakers—the Senior Girls Volleyball team won silver in the Island Championships over the weekend, earning them a berth to the Provincial Championships being held in Castlegar next week. Led by team captain, Farrah Newham, the girls won six games in a row before narrowly losing 13–15 in the third set tie-breaker of their seventh and final game against Duncan Christian. “Farrah stepped up tremendously,” reports team coach Ellie Sercombe. “She led the team on the court with her level of play and intensity, but also off the court by keeping the girls focused on what their season goal was.” Coaches Sercombe and Veryan Wolsak are understandably proud of their team that—by all reports—played their best volleyball of the year. “The girls earned this,” states Sercombe. “They won with dignity and held their heads high in defeat. They are an exceptional group of girls.” Kudos must also go out to Kirby Mclean, who took on the role of setter when the team did not have one at the beginning of the season. “In volleyball, the setter can make or break a team,” says Wolsak. “We lost our star setter last year. Ellie saw Kirby that was the right person to step up and Kirby has excelled in this new role.” A huge congratulations to the Sr Girls Volleyball team—its players and its coaching staff—on a wonderful achievement. Best of luck to them at the Provincials!
