Every year, Glenlyon Norfolk School comes together to celebrate the life and achievements of Terry Fox, and to participate in his Marathon of Hope. This year, the school also participated in Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It grew out of Residential School survivor Phyllis Webstad’s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. There were tonnes of orange shirts on display on Friday when the school took to the turf. After a warmup led by Ms. Hall, students, teachers and parents sprinted, jogged, and walked around the school together. It was a gorgeous fall day, and by dismissal everyone was in excellent spirits.
