Setagaya Gakuen Hosting

Each July, Glenlyon Norfolk School is pleased to welcome around 210 Grade 10 male students from our brother school in Tokyo, Setagaya Gakuen School (SGS), to Victoria, to learn English in our GNS Summer Language Program. It is one of the longest running summer language programs in Victoria.

Every summer for over 35 years, Glenlyon Norfolk School has welcomed over 200 Grade 9 or 10 male students from our brother school in Tokyo, Setagaya Gakuen School (SGS), to Victoria, on a cultural exchange that focuses on learning English, embracing Canadian culture and enhancing the bond between our schools. It is one of the longest-running summer language programs in Canada!
A valuable feature of this program is our homestay experience. We look for local families to provide accommodation, breakfast and dinner, transportation to/from the school, and daily home and living experiences of Canadian families.
The students are in classes from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day while in Victoria. During the hosting period, when the boys are not at school, we ask that families spend time with boys, immersing them in the day-to-day life of a Canadian family. This could include trips to local beaches, tours of downtown, or a swim at the local recreation centre (your homestay information package will include a more comprehensive package of activities to consider).
The summer homestay program schedule this year runs on the following dates:
  • July 19 (Wed) – July 25 (Tue) (6 nights - depart morning of July 25)
  • July 25 (Tue) – July 31 (Mon) (6 nights - depart morning of July 31)
  • July 31 (Mon) – August 6 (Sun) (6 nights - depart morning of August 6)
On the first day of each program, we ask that you come to GNS for a brief orientation at 3 p.m. Homestay introductions follow at 3:30 p.m. On the last day of homestay, please drop off students at the GNS PW Campus by 8 a.m.
Interested hosts should please complete this Registration Form or email homestay@mygns.ca for more information.
